First a description of the main types of poles you will come across and where they work best.
Aluminum: These are very versatile and light poles. Ideal for outdoor use as they will not rust on you. They are strong but not as strong as steel. The difference in weight though makes them much easier to place. The majority of wall mounted poles are also made of aluminum.
Steel: By far the strongest poles. May require more maintenance over the years to prevent rusting. Usually used for wall mounted models mainly due to their weight.
Wooden: These poles are flexible and strong. One piece poles have that lovely warm, rustic look to them. Ideal for wall mounted units. Make sure the wood is ground durable for in ground use.
Fibreglass: Extremely light, strong and flexible. Not usually found for your in ground type.
Make sure when buying your pole that it comes complete with the following kit: Halyard (rope for raising and lowering) 2 Snap hooks, Cleat, Stationary pulley (truck), Ball for the top of the pole, PVC sleeve for in ground models. Many designs now come with anti wrap devices that keep your flag from tangling. They are well worth considering.
